Ottery St Mary has officially entered the competition to become the UK’s Town of Culture 2028!
To mark the occasion, a digital postcard showcasing the town’s unique culture, history, traditions and natural environment has been submitted to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).
The postcard highlights some of the things that make Ottery St Mary special, from the internationally famous Tar Barrels and colourful Pixie Day celebrations to the town’s rich literary connections, stunning parish church and the beautiful River Otter landscape.
The UK Town of Culture initiative celebrates places that can demonstrate a strong sense of identity, creativity and community spirit. Ottery St Mary’s postcard reflects the stories, traditions and natural heritage that have shaped the town over generations and continue to bring people together today.
From the fire and spectacle of the Tar Barrels to the folklore of Pixie Day, the legacy of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and the wildlife of the River Otter, the town’s entry captures a snapshot of the culture that makes Ottery St Mary unique.
