Biography
Hi, I’m Sarah, one of your town councillors here in Ottery St Mary. I was co-opted in August 2025, and it’s a real privilege to represent a town I care so much about.
My background’s quite mixed — I spent over 15 years teaching Science in secondary schools, including ten years as a Head of Science and five as an Assistant headteacher. I’ve always enjoyed working with people, whether that’s helping students, managing teams, or just figuring out how to fix things when they go wrong.
In 2018, I started Nourish, a zero-waste shop in Exeter, back when there were only a handful in the UK. It grew quickly, won a few awards, and I ended up mentoring others around the country to set up their own. These days, I work for the Environment Agency, managing the water resources team who support sustainable water use and ensure water resources are protected for people, wildlife, and the environment.
I try to bring a practical, science-based approach to my role on the council. I care about the environment, supporting small businesses, and making sure local voices are heard when decisions are made. I like to get stuck in, look at the evidence, and find sensible ways forward.
Outside of work, I love cold-water swimming and scuba diving, and cooking. I’ve even won some prizes for making bacon and chilli!
If there’s anything you’d like to talk about or if you’ve got an idea or concern, just drop me a message — I’m always happy to chat and help if I can.
