Mayor’s Charity of the Year 2012

At the same time as searching for the “Citizen of the Year”, Mayor Glyn Dobson is also looking to back a charity in 2012 and he is asking for your help in deciding which one to support.  The Council will help the successful charity with publicity by including its logos, straplines and slogans on the Council’s website and computer-generated literature.  Posters and leaflets will be on show at the Council Offices.  Once the voting deadline has passed the Mayor will review the nominations and shortlist three charities that mean the most to him, then the residents attending the Annual Parish Meeting on Tuesday 24th April will be asked to vote for their favourite charity from the three shortlisted charities and the charity with the most votes will become the Mayor’s Charity of the Year.  To vote for your favourite charity please complete the nomination slip and return to the Council Offices by Tuesday 10th April.  Alternatively you can email your nomination to enquiries@otterystmary-tc.gov.uk including these details:  nominated charity, your name, address and phone number and the reason for your nomination.

OTTERY ST MARY & DISTRICT HELP SCHEME

CAN WE HELP YOU OR WOULD  you like to help us?

We provide much needed support to local residents in times of illness or a period of life changing circumstances.  Many of you may know us, but many of you will not.

We are based at the Coleridge Medical Centre and provide support to people of Ottery St Mary and surrounding villages and hamlets, reaching as far as Newton Poppleford, Colaton Raleigh, Aylesbeare, Rockbeare, Whimple, Talaton, Payhembury, Feniton

The help scheme provides a number of services which provide a number of volunteering opportunities, as a volunteer you could:

-     provide transport to medical appointments – we particularly need people who live in the outlaying villages

-     Support people at the memory café – an informal drop in for people with dementia and their carers

-     Visit people at home and support with small practical tasks

-     Support our nail cutting service

-     Support people who have recently been bereaved, at our groups or on a 1:1

-     Help at fundraising events or with funding letters and applications, helping to keep our charity going or share any other skills you may have to support our charity.

A little bit of your time goes a long way to helping someone else – we all need a helping hand sometime in our life.

A little bit of history:

The help scheme was started in 1992 with the help of Ottery St Mary Hospital League of Friends.  Since then the scheme has gone from strength to strength providing a number of services for local people.  In 2002 Ottery St Mary & District Help Scheme became a charity in its own right.  Our funding comes from a number of sources but mainly relies on the generosity of local organisations and businesses, individuals and bequests.

Thank you for taking the time to read this article – please call us on 01404 816700 if you can help us or we can help you.
