Ottery St Mary & District Help Scheme

                 Mayor’s Charity of The Year

                           2010-2011

Ottery St Mary parish residents overwhelmingly voted for the wonderful and cherished Help Scheme to be our first Mayor’s Charity of the Year.

This vital service, which is only possible thanks to the kindness and commitment of dozens of volunteers, will now will receive much-needed publicity through Ottery St Mary Town Council and of course, I will support them in any way I can.

The Help Scheme provides support for local people who are unwell, disabled, housebound, bereaved or are somehow in need. Around 85 volunteers providesupport for people in the following ways:

Help at home and breaks for carers
• Befriending and visiting people who are elderly, unwell or isolated
• Transport to hospital, medical appointments or day care centres
• Childminding for families struggling to cope
• Home delivery service for hospital meals
• Shopping and delivering prescriptions
• A specialist bereavement service

Volunteers carry out around 450 tasks each month, as well as other informal visits.

The initiative is partly funded through Social Services and Ottery St Mary Hospital League of Friends, but donations from local people are essential to keep the scheme in operation.

If you would like more information about Ottery St Mary & District Help Scheme, either to volunteer or donate money, please contact co-ordinators, Pat Lane and Jane Ross on 01404 816700 or email: info@helpscheme.eclipse.co.uk

You never know when you might need support from the Help Scheme. If you have some free time, please consider lending a hand to assist those less fortunate.
Thank you.

Cllr Glyn Dobson
Mayor, Ottery St Mary Town Council

The Ottery St Mary Help Scheme has raised £7,000 in the 6 months since Campaign 2010 was launched through events such as a Parachute Jump, London Marathon entry and a Spring Draw, which alone netted £1,000.

But the Charity needs to bring £7,000 a year to survive, so fundraising is an ongoing process. Assistant Co-ordinator Jane Ross has said" if anyone's got any ideas, they can contact us"
